A game of millimetres is the only way to describe the WSFL game against Spearwood Lions. This was always going to be a good encounter with both teams wanting those much needed points to stay in touch with the top 4.
The AFC girls were in control for most of the game and with great saves between the sticks by Danielle Caruso and the girls scoring the first goal with a fantastic top corner strike from Steph Funnekotter had them stay 1-0 up at the half time break.
The Lions came out to play in the second half but AFC’s hard defensive line led by Beck Bennett kept them at bay and with Danielle called into action again between the sticks it looked unlikely that the Lions were going to get an easy goal. Until AFC decided to assist them with two own goals giving them a 2-1 lead in quick succession and our girls found it difficult to get the ball away from the posts and into the middle of the goals.
A last 40 second change from Coach Rob Caruso gave the girls a strong run towards goal and Amanda Smith did not disappoint with pin point accuracy from the corner of the court giving us a much needed second goal. With a brilliant save by Danielle with 30 seconds to go to deny a goal to the Lions and at 10 seconds to go a brilliant set of play from the back line to Megan saw a millimetre miss and the girls were left with a 2-2 draw.
It was a great game of defensive and offensive strategies from Perth AFC that could have gone their way but for the inaccuracy by only the tiniest of margins and some soft passing. The girls are looking more and more threatening each week and their team play is getting stronger and stronger.
